Pinecone Research, Panel Champ

The National Consumer Panel is an established company backed by two research powers, NielsenIQ and IRI. The NCP is a "mini-USA", representing millions of Americans. Since 1987 (originally as Nielsen Homescan, then in 2010 as National Consumer Panel), the NCP has been gathering panel member's opinions and shopping data to help manufacturers and retailers make informed decisions on what products to develop, improve or sell in the market.

The NCP panel gives panelists the opportunity to earn rewards from a fun and simple process, simply by scanning barcodes of the items they buy every week! You could change the face of your favorite brands or improve your shopping experience by becoming a member.

Payment and Rewards

Sign Up for Your Spot

Being immediately accepted into the program is not guaranteed because acceptance is based upon if/when there is an opening or a need for specific household demographics, so availability does vary. To sign up for NCP, simply click the green 'join now' buttons on this page to apply for a position.

Rewards for Participating

Earn points for sending your shopping data each week and for answering surveys. NCPMobile participants can redeem their points towards gift cards including: AMC, Amazon, Apple, Delta, Fandango, Google Play, Groupon, Spotify, Uber as well as for Vanilla Visa cards.

Participants with hand-held scanners can access NCP's online gift catalog that contains a wide variety of name-brand merchandise including electronics, home appliances, sporting goods, toys and more!

Earn More Rewards

New NCP panel members earn reward points for registration and reporting their first shopping trip. In addition, panel members earn 250 reward points for birthdays, 1,000 bonus points on their 6-month anniversary and 1,000 bonus points on their 1-year anniversary (and each year after that). Other seasonal and ad-hoc promotions can earn panel members additional reward points depending on their participation.

Participant Experience

Scan Your Purchases with the National Consumer Panel App

As a new member of NCP, you will receive access to NCPMobile, their exclusive mobile app for scanning and reporting your shopping trip details (available in iOS and Android). Use the app to scan the barcodes on your weekly purchases and earn rewards for your participation. You can also provide information on non-barcoded items you purchase (such as fruit and vegetables, baked goods, gas, prescriptions, etc.) using the app. You may be asked to provide additional information on a shopping trip, including the store you went to, if you used a club card, etc. Sharing this level of detail will help the product makers and retailers that are responsible for the products you love to purchase and is easily done so using the interface.

Earn Reward Points!

Points are largely earned by scanning your weekly purchases. You'll start by getting 150 points each week NCP receives your shopping data. The weekly amount of points increases the longer you are on the panel. With opportunities to earn additional points by answering surveys, special NCP promotions, specialty panels, etc., points can add up quickly. Gift offerings begin at 5,000 points.

Painful process, bad rewards

February 20, 2014 by Jen from United States

I was a member for maybe 3 months. I can't tell you how time consuming it is to scan your purchases. And not only to scan them, but to enter quantity, price, coupons used, etc. The time required would be ok if the rewards were good. However the reward choices left a *lot* to be desired. Ultimately I was tired of them calling me if I missed a scan week. I knew I'd never get anything good for my time. So I canceled. Beware - they immediately lock you out of your account and you can no longer turn in reward points. I don't know if I had enough to get anything at all, but ultimately you lose all access. I returned the scanner via the FedEx label they provided - the box will not fit into a dropbox like they tell you. 5 days after the scanner was delivered, they called me and left me a message that they didn't get the scanner and if they don't get it in 2 weeks I'd be turned over to collections. I don't like threats. I called them back. I was told they received the scanner and they have no idea why I received a call. Bottom line - too much trouble. Not worth it. Think twice before signing up!

38000 points

February 16, 2014 by lovey from United States

I have been a member of NCP since 2006. The last gift I got was a junky Bissell sweeper that conked in 2 months! After waiting for over almost a month for a pickup tag or reimburse my points they called me last night, very rudely and told me that it was up to me to work it out with the company! I cancelled my membership and they wiped out my remaining points! I emailed them if they want their scanner back they will have to give my points back so I can order one last time. So much for being a loyal customer, and yes it takes forever to buy something with the points, a lot of work!

You will receive nothing from this company. Your groceries will defrost and go bad while you fumble through receipts to find the price you paid for each individual item. Anytime you forget to do it you'll receive threatening emails. Eventually you'll realize all this effort (about half an hour per shopping trip) is repaid with about 15 cents a month in points. However, you'll never be able to cash these "points" because you'll give up scanning things and have your name turned to a collection agency because you have their equipment still and haven't scanned for a couple weeks.

P.S. your family will love you for letting their ice cream melt for 15 cents a month and bad credit.
(...and I'm not allowed to give zero stars)

Terrible, just terrible!

February 2, 2014 by Raven from United States

The actually scanning of your groceries takes forever because you have to not only enter the price for each item but answer several other questions for each item as well. I couldn't get a whole receipt done before things started melting.

Additionally, if you don't transmit regularly, they start harassing you. I sent my equipment back in, got the confirmation email that they received it, yet I am getting recorded messages threatening to send me to a collection agency.

I frequently participate in several survey companies and this one is the worst. Don't. Waste. Your. Time!

Rude company!

January 17, 2014 by April from United Kingdom

I Do NOT recommend Nielsen consumer panel to anyone!
we received our scanner but couldn't get it to work back in the summer of 2013. They sent us a new scanner and another time new cables and it still didn't work and so they sent us a bag to return the scanner in September 2013 having wasted hours scanning our shopping over the few months we had it.
We returned it only to receive an abrupt phone call automated message in October 2013 demanding we return the equipment which I called and said we had done some weeks before.
We have today January 17th 2014 had a Final Notice letter demanding the return of their equipment with the threat of them taking legal action and charging us for the equipment!
I tried to call their helpline which gives you three options to choose from but each option takes you back to that same automated message offering the three options over and over again.
I managed to search an alternative number for them through their press office and called to say yet again that I have returned their equipment 3-4 months ago!
They told me the letters have been sent out in error and that they have had lots of calls today but NO apology!!
We wont get anything for the points we had collected and I wish I'd never had anything to do with this rude officious company whose customer service leaves much to be desired!
Don't use them, it's not worth the hassle and threats!! here's hoping this is the end of the matter and that they retract their threats made to us but somehow I fear this wont be the last of it. Please spread the word!
Thanks
